Ferrules are a convenient device used for termination of stranded wires. Ferrules replace conventional tinning, and eliminate the risk of fraying of single strands and consequent accidental contacts and short circuits. They also protect the wire from damage when using spring, compression screw or "split-bolt" terminals. Ferrules are crimped on the stripped end of the wire, using specially designed crimping tools.
